503 Filmmakers Urgently Request Budget Allocation from Government
Claims for the Introduction of French-Style Automatic Sorting Support System
On the 22nd, 503 film industry professionals proposed emergency policies to the current government and presidential candidates from various parties to overcome the crisis in Korean cinema. They pointed out that the entire film industry has collapsed and related sectors are on the brink of starvation due to decreased theater revenues caused by the spread of COVID-19, and presented five measures: ▲ urgent budget allocation for the restoration of the collapsed film industry ▲ introduction of a French-style automatic selective support system ▲ eradication of unfair trade practices and regulation of combined screening and distribution ▲ regulation of screen monopolies and establishment of the holdback system ▲ prohibition of large corporations from using small and medium enterprise support funds. The Film Industry Emergency Policy Forum, which led the statement, emphasized that "establishing a virtuous cycle structure of creation, production, distribution, and screening, as well as a fair market order, is urgent and essential," and added, "restoring the ecosystem of Korean cinema will lead to youth job creation, startup cultivation, national prestige, and cultural exchange, bringing not only national benefits but also enhancing citizens' cultural enjoyment rights." Participants in the proposal included directors Kim Dae-seung, Yuk Sang-hyo, Lee Myung-se, Yoon Ga-eun, Lee Jung-bum, Lee Han, Myung Film CEO Shim Jae-myung, and cinematographer Kim Woo-hyung.
