Changwon City held a groundbreaking ceremony on the 22nd at the public parking lot of Bongsan Village in Yanggok-dong, Seongsan-gu, attended by about 100 people including the head of the residents' autonomy association, the head of the Saemaeul Association, the head of the Barugesalgi Association, and the principal of nearby Yanggok Elementary School.
The Yanggokcheon ecological stream restoration project will be carried out over a total distance of 1.8 km from Yanggok Samgeori in Yanggok-dong to the confluence point with Namcheon, with a total project cost of 7.6 billion KRW.
The project involves removing the concrete bottom of the stream, planting aquatic plants, creating ecological habitats, and installing flood defense walls to prepare for floods, as well as flood control measures for residents' safety.
The city first started this project in 2016 to restore the health of the aquatic ecosystem of Yanggokcheon, whose ecological environment had been damaged, and to provide a resting space for citizens.
After going through administrative procedures such as the aquatic ecosystem restoration plan and changes to the basic river plan with the Ministry of Environment and Gyeongnam Province, detailed design was completed in October last year, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on this day.
Since 2010, Changwon City has completed the same project on seven streams?Changwoncheon, Namcheon, Sanhocheon, Samhocheon, Jangguncheon, Gyobangcheon, and Bongnimcheon?covering a total distance of 25.41 km, and currently, the ecological stream restoration project for Daejang Sosa Stream in Jinhae-gu is underway, aiming for completion in October.
