President Moon presides over NSC on 'Ukraine'... "Devise proactive response measures" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 22nd, President Moon Jae-in chaired a joint meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) and the Foreign Economic Security Strategy Meeting regarding the Ukraine situation, urging the formulation of proactive response measures. While emphasizing the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine situation, he also stated that South Korea would participate in efforts for a peaceful solution.
On the same day, President Moon chaired the NSC at the National Crisis Management Center and emphasized, "We must more closely examine the economic impact of the Ukraine situation."
President Moon said, "Our government has been closely monitoring the situation from the early stages of the Ukraine crisis on an intergovernmental level, carefully checking the protection of overseas nationals and the economic impact according to various scenarios that may unfold," adding, "As the situation develops rapidly, we must now establish a faster, more proactive, and concrete response posture."
President Moon stated, "Although trade and economic relations between our country and Ukraine are not large, if the situation prolongs and Western countries such as the United States impose strong sanctions on Russia, it could have a significant impact on our economy," and requested, "Please proactively devise response measures for various possibilities in advance to ensure that our economy does not suffer unexpected damage."
Regarding the Ukraine situation, he expressed concern, saying, "The situation is unfolding urgently," and emphasized peaceful resolution by stating, "The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected. Active efforts should be made to seek peaceful solutions through dialogue."
He continued, "It is by no means desirable for the Ukraine situation to deteriorate into armed conflict contrary to the expectations of the international community," and added, "Countries around the world must unite their efforts to ensure that the Ukraine issue is resolved peacefully as soon as possible, and South Korea will actively participate in these efforts as a responsible member of the international community."
