SK Hynix Alone Grows Despite Global DRAM Sales Decline in Q4 Last Year
TrendForce "SK Hynix Q4 DRAM Sales Grow 2.8%"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] In the fourth quarter of last year, global DRAM sales decreased by nearly 6% compared to the previous quarter, with SK Hynix being the only company among the top six to show sales growth.
On the 18th, market research firm TrendForce announced that global DRAM sales in the fourth quarter of last year recorded $25.03 billion, down 5.8% from the previous quarter. The spread of COVID-19 led to limited supply of components for smartphones, servers, and PCs, resulting in decreased shipments and falling DRAM prices. Semiconductor buyers also showed weak intentions to stockpile inventory.
Industry leader Samsung Electronics saw its DRAM market share in the fourth quarter slightly decline to 42.3% from 44.0% in the third quarter. Its sales decreased by 9.4% compared to the previous quarter. In contrast, SK Hynix's market share rose to 29.7% from 27.2% in the third quarter. Its sales also increased by 2.8% quarter-on-quarter. The market share gap between Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix narrowed from 16.8 percentage points to 12.6 percentage points.
Micron, ranked third, experienced an 8.3% decrease in sales in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, while Nanya saw a 10.1% decline. Fifth and sixth-ranked Winbond and PSMC also saw sales drop by 3.5% and 1.2%, respectively. Among the top six companies, SK Hynix was the only one to increase DRAM sales in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter.

TrendForce forecasted that in the first quarter of this year, oversupply will continue to exert downward pressure on DRAM prices, potentially leading to further declines in DRAM sales. TrendForce stated, "The first quarter is a low season for the DRAM market, and with high inventory levels, overall purchasing momentum is weak," adding, "DRAM sales may decrease further in the first quarter of this year."
