Through this contest, the city plans to select a name that highlights the meaning and identity of the former Mokpo Customs Warehouse Complex Cultural Space, which will be newly reborn with contents such as Mokpo’s flavors, tourism, history, and culture.
The contest period is from the 18th to the 25th, and any Mokpo citizen can participate with no limit on the number of entries per person. The prize money for the final selected work is 1 million won.
Citizens wishing to apply can fill out the application form posted on the Mokpo city website’s notices and announcements section and submit it via email. The city plans to announce the final selected work on the 14th of next month after internal evaluation and expert review.
The former Mokpo Customs Warehouse consists of a large warehouse (661.16㎡), a small warehouse (330.58㎡), and an outdoor space. The city plans to open it as a complex cultural space in April.
Mokpo Customs began customs operations under the name Haegwan (海關) on October 1, 1897, when Mokpo port opened. It was renamed Customs (稅關) in 1907 and moved from Mokpojin to its current location (Hangdong 6-33) in 1908. It continued customs operations until 1968 before relocating to Samhakdo.
Recognizing its historical value, the former Mokpo Customs site and two warehouses were designated as national registered cultural heritage on June 24, 2020. Since July 2020, the city has been promoting a development project to transform the site into a complex cultural space.
The city plans to utilize the large warehouse as a food lab and small food zone where various food-themed programs can be experienced, and the small warehouse as a historical exhibition space of the former Mokpo Customs and a smart tourism platform providing tourist information and convenience facilities.
Meanwhile, the city is also recruiting operators for the small food zone (food sales facility) to be installed in the large warehouse of the complex cultural space until March 11.
