Although discussions on the 'opposition unity' proposed by Ahn are unlikely to happen immediately, it is expected that the talks may open up as early as this weekend or early next week following a meeting with Yoon Seok-youl, the candidate of the People Power Party.
According to the People’s Party on the 17th, Ahn visited the funeral hall in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where the wake for the driver who died in the accident was held, to pay his respects in the evening. Ahn expressed his deep sorrow on his Facebook page the day before, saying, "Two people who helped me, Ahn Cheol-soo, suffered a very tragic accident." He also visited the wake of the late Son Pyeong-o, the election committee chairman for Nonsan, Gyeryong, and Geumsan, and stayed to receive mourners.
The People’s Party plans to suspend official election activities until the funeral on the 18th and focus on handling the accident. Hong Kyung-hee, spokesperson for the People’s Party, said, "The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow, and after that, the election committee will hold a briefing with various matters."
The People Power Party is drawing a line, saying that it is not the time to talk about unification given the circumstances. Kwon Young-se, head of the People Power Party’s election committee, told reporters after the committee meeting that day, "The People’s Party has been going through many difficulties recently, and I think it is inappropriate to talk about unification or opposition integration in such a situation." When asked if Yoon Seok-youl and Ahn have plans to meet in the future, he replied, "I don’t think it is proper to discuss such matters including that."
However, the People Power Party interprets Yoon’s visit to the Cheonan funeral hall and his approximately 25-minute conversation with Ahn the day before as a ‘positive signal.’ Kim Jae-won, a senior member of the People Power Party, said on CBS Radio that "(Yoon) meeting with Ahn and having a brief but meaningful conversation was enough to strengthen their emotional bond," adding, "The fact that they talked increases the possibility of better communication in the future when discussing unification or other matters."

There is speculation that unification talks could take place around this weekend. This is considered the most likely time for Ahn to resume his official campaign, taking into account that less than three weeks remain until the election. Um Kyung-young, director of the Era Spirit Research Institute, analyzed, "Discussions can only begin after the funeral for the fatal accident is over. Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, may also have made new proposals to Ahn, so it will likely be around the weekend or early next week before these matters are settled."
