The Democratic Party of Korea's Gwangju-Jeonnam Election Countermeasures Committee held the kickoff rally around 10:30 a.m. at the 5·18 Democracy Square in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, with about 290 supporters and citizens gathered.
At the rally, Lee Nak-yeon, the overall election committee chairman from Honam, along with local members of the National Assembly and local councilors, attended in large numbers to pledge victory in the presidential election.
Supporters wearing matching blue jumpers held placards with photos of candidate Lee Jae-myung and shouted slogans in time with the official campaign music.
Despite the harsh weather with snowflakes fluttering and biting winds, supporters braved the conditions, buttoning up their coats and continuing their cheers for Lee Jae-myung's victory.
Before the main event of the kickoff rally, elected officials from Gwangju and Jeonnam lined up in a row and bowed deeply toward the citizens of Gwangju and the province, appealing for support.

Chairman Lee appealed, "The nation's highest leader must be someone who has compassion for the people, who can shed tears for the people's pain, and who has a warm heart that sees the world with love," adding, "The regression of democracy and the crisis of prosecutorial overreach must be confronted head-on by the citizens of Gwangju and the residents of Jeonnam."
He also strongly criticized the abolition of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO).
He said, "The Moon Jae-in administration established the CIO to ensure democratic control over the prosecution and to maintain checks and balances for the completion of democracy and prosecutorial reform," and raised his voice, "However, the opposition presidential candidate says he will abolish the prosecution minister's investigative directive over the prosecution, which is a hard-won achievement of democracy that we have just taken off."
He pointed out, "Isn't this an attempt to erase all the prosecutorial reforms, including the establishment of the CIO that civil society demanded and that took 25 years to complete, and to return to the old prosecution system?"
He added, "In times of crisis, a government with experience and capability to respond to the crisis is needed. I appeal for your support because I believe that the Democratic Party and candidate Lee Jae-myung still possess that experience and capability."
Following him, Song Gap-seok, chairman of the Gwangju City Party, said, "It is very meaningful that the kickoff rally for this presidential election starts at the Democracy Square in front of the old Jeonnam Provincial Office," shouting, "This place is a historic site of the May 18 Democratic Movement and the root of Gwangju and Jeonnam."
He emphasized, "We must unite tightly to become the foundation for Lee Jae-myung's victory."
Kang Ki-jung, chief special advisor; Kim Seung-nam, chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Party; and lawmakers Shin Jeong-hoon, So Byung-chul, Seo Sam-seok, Lee Gae-ho, and Yoon Young-duk also lent their support in appealing for Lee Jae-myung's victory.
