Official Presidential Campaign Begins... Will the Door Close on Yoon-An 'Unification'?
People Party "Yoon's Silence Ultimately Means NO... Will Judge Candidate Ahn"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Skepticism is growing over whether the unification between Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, and Ahn Cheol-soo, the People's Party's presidential candidate?one of the biggest variables in the March presidential election?will be realized. As Yoon's silence continues, the possibility of Ahn withdrawing his unification proposal is increasing.
Choi Jin-seok, Standing Committee Member of the People's Party's Presidential Campaign Committee, said on MBC Radio on the 15th, "(Ahn) may officially declare the failure of unification with Yoon." He added, "From what we understand, the People Power Party has no intention of unifying."
Lee Tae-gyu, General Headquarters Chief of the People's Party, expressed concerns in a phone interview with Asia Economy, saying, "(The explicit signal that the People Power Party will not agree to unification) is prolonged silence." He added, "The People Power Party seems to be trying to wear down negotiations, believing that over time, the camp will lean toward Yoon due to factional logic." Lee said, "Ahn has made the proposal and is waiting for a response, but whether to keep waiting or to cut it off midway is a decision for the candidate."
The People Power Party has also failed to consolidate opinions since Ahn's unification proposal. Kim Jae-won, Supreme Council Member of the People Power Party, stated on a radio show that day, "As far as I know, there have been no significant negotiations." At least, no meetings between messengers conveying the presidential candidates' intentions have taken place.
Kim described Ahn's proposal as a 'long shot,' suggesting it relies on reverse voting in opinion polls. Kim said, "If unification happens as desired, it could be considered a lucky break for the unified presidential candidate." He added, "The only way for a bronze medalist to snatch the gold medal in polls is through score manipulation, and if that is enforced, an opportunity might arise." This refers to the method used in the previous Seoul mayoral candidate unification, where supporters of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, could intervene in polls to create reverse voting.

The People Power Party is also cautious about the possibility of a direct negotiation by Yoon. Kim Byung-min, spokesperson for the campaign headquarters, said in a phone call, "Today is the official start of the election campaign, so (Yoon's camp) is busy," and added, "There is no additional statement regarding unification."
