Microsoft to Return to Office by End of Month... Will Increase Work Flexibility
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Microsoft (MS) has decided to reopen its offices at the end of this month in the United States due to the slowdown in the spread of COVID-19 and the increase in vaccination rates. Although it has instructed employees to return to the office, MS has prepared measures to allow adjustments in work location and hours to expand work flexibility.
According to Bloomberg and other sources on the 14th (local time), MS ordered employees to return to the offices in Washington state, where its headquarters is located, and the Silicon Valley area by reopening the offices on the 28th of this month. MS had previously announced a return to the office in September last year but withdrew the plan due to the spread of the Omicron variant; this is the first announcement in about five months.
With this measure, approximately 103,000 employees in the U.S. are expected to return to the office. However, even with the offices reopening, not all employees will work five days a week in the office. MS plans to transition to a hybrid work model, providing more flexibility regarding remote work as it has stated before.
Chris Capossela, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), announced that from the 28th of this month, a 30-day grace period will be designated during which work schedules can be adjusted, allowing each team to modify work locations or hours. He said, "I know there is no single solution for how people work best."

MS has been operating a 'hybrid work model' divided into six stages based on the spread of COVID-19, local government guidelines, and vaccination rates. This measure corresponds to the final stage, stage 6, and MS stated that other regional offices in the U.S. are also expected to open as conditions permit.
