Yeonggwang-gun to Completely Ban Single-Use Plastic Cups Starting April
[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 11th that the use of disposable items inside stores such as restaurants and cafes (food service establishments) will be completely banned starting April, in accordance with the Ministry of Environment's revised notification (January 6, 2022).
The Ministry of Environment explained that the revised notification and enforcement rules aim to reduce indiscriminate use of disposable items amid increased waste generation due to changes in consumer culture and the impact of COVID-19, which have led to increased use of disposable products.
The main content of the revised notification is that previously, disposable items such as plastic cups, plates, and containers could be used temporarily during infectious disease outbreaks, but from April 1, disposable items will no longer be allowed as before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, with the revision of the enforcement rules, since November 24 of last year, paper cups, plastic straws, and stirring sticks have been added to the list of regulated disposable items and their use is prohibited.
During the guidance period, the county will send notification letters to food service establishments in the region and promote the regulation of disposable item use through the county website and SNS, along with focused on-site guidance until the end of next month.
Starting April 1, businesses violating this regulation will be subject to stricter fines depending on the size of the business.
For more details, inquiries can be made to the Urban Environment Division of the county office.
