Korea Council of Provincial Council Chairs Urges Compensation Measures for Nuclear Power Plant Area Residents
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils of the Republic of Korea (Chairman Kim In-ho, Chairman of Seoul Metropolitan Council) held its 2nd extraordinary meeting on the 10th at the Ramada Mungyeong Saejae Hotel banquet hall in Mungyeong City, adopting 11 government petitions including urging the establishment of compensation measures for residents affected by nuclear power plants.
At the extraordinary meeting, chairpersons of 17 provincial councils attended and handled a total of 11 agenda items, including reports on the council's major business plans and the review of petitions requested by each provincial council.
The adopted petitions will be delivered under the name of the Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils of the Republic of Korea to the National Assembly and relevant central government ministries, with plans to jointly respond to ensure their implementation.
The main petitions include ▲ urging the government to establish compensation measures for nuclear power plant areas and residents affected by the government's energy transition policy ▲ urging the establishment of preventive measures against industrial worker accidents ▲ urging the enactment of a special law for the undergrounding of the Gyeongin Line and integrated development of the upper space.
Chairman Kim In-ho said, “Local councils representing residents will take the lead in resolving local issues needed by the community,” adding, “We will do our best to enhance the status of councils in line with the era of local autonomy and decentralization and to practically improve the lives of local residents.”

The extraordinary meeting was attended by Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Jeollanam-do Office of Education, and Go Yun-hwan, Mayor of Mungyeong City, who congratulated the holding of the meeting.
