The Fall of the Best Investigator... Former Officer Convicted of Bribery Receives Prison Sentence in Second Trial
Prison Sentence of 1 Year and 4 Months, Fine of 50 Million Won, and Forfeiture of 63 Million Won Upheld
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] A former police officer who engaged in inappropriate financial transactions with a person involved in a case was sentenced to prison again in the appellate court.
The Gwangju District Court's 1st Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Kim Jae-geun) held a sentencing hearing on the 10th for former Lieutenant A, affiliated with the Gwangsan Police Station, who was indicted on charges including bribery.
The court stated, "It is difficult to view the original sentence as excessively harsh or lenient," dismissing the appeals from both the defendant and the prosecution, and upheld the original sentence of 1 year and 4 months imprisonment, a fine of 50 million KRW, and a confiscation of 63 million KRW.
A was tried on charges of borrowing 200 million KRW interest-free from person B, who was involved in a case, between 2015 and 2017 while serving as a police officer, thereby obtaining financial benefits (bribes).
It was reported that he engaged in financial transactions with B in exchange for investigative favors (referring the case under charges with lighter statutory penalties).
He is also accused of lending 240.7 million KRW in operating funds to a friend who operated an illegal sports gambling site and receiving interest under the pretext of profits.
A was dismissed in September last year after his misconduct was exposed.
