Jeju Police Conduct Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving... 446 Caught
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Go Gi-cheol) announced on the 10th that a total of 446 people were caught during the "Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving" conducted from last November to the end of last month.
This drunk driving crackdown was promoted to preemptively block the atmosphere of drunk driving that increased along with various gatherings and drinking parties due to the implementation of "gradual daily recovery" and the year-end and New Year holidays.
During this special crackdown, a total of 446 people (192 license suspensions, 254 cancellations) were caught over three months.
It was calculated that an average of 5.4 people were caught per day, nearly double the 248 people caught during the same period last year.
During the special crackdown period, a total of 76 drunk driving traffic accidents occurred, slightly increasing compared to 74 cases during the same period last year, but the number of deaths caused by drunk driving dropped to zero, a 100% decrease.
Despite the strengthened crackdown on drunk driving, drunk driving acts and related traffic accidents continue to occur without interruption.
Although no deaths due to drunk driving occurred during the special crackdown period, a total of 8 people died from drunk driving throughout last year, a 60% increase compared to 2020.
Jeju Police will continue to conduct intensive crackdowns by frequently changing times and locations in close cooperation with the autonomous police unit while paying attention to COVID-19 infection prevention, utilizing improved performance compound detectors.
A Jeju Police Agency official said, "Drunk driving is a 'serious criminal act' that can instantly take away not only one's own but also others' precious lives and property," and added, "Please remember that you will be caught anytime and anywhere, and never get behind the wheel even after having one drink."
