Operating Voice Phishing Relay Devices on Solar Panels Installed in a Mountainous Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A manager who operated a tampered relay device used for telecommunication financial fraud (voice phishing) with solar panels installed on a hillside was arrested by the police.
According to the police, on the 9th, the Mapo Police Station in Seoul arrested and detained a man in his 20s, identified as A, on the 7th of this month on charges of violating the Telecommunications Business Act.
A is suspected of operating the device by supplying electricity to the tampered relay device through solar panels installed on hillsides in Seongnam and Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, since October last year. This relay device converts phone numbers originating from overseas into mobile phone numbers (010).
The court held a pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) for A on the morning of the same day and issued the warrant.
While there have been multiple crackdowns on relay devices operated in lodging facilities or vacant houses, operating a relay device on a hillside has been identified as a recently emerging method.
