[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency have recommended mandatory vaccinations before entering elementary and middle school to prevent infectious diseases among students.
The vaccinations that must be completed before entering elementary school include four types: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) 5th dose, inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) 4th dose, measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) 2nd dose, and Japanese encephalitis (inactivated vaccine 4th dose or live attenuated vaccine 2nd dose).
Before entering middle school, two types of vaccinations must be administered: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) 6th dose, and Japanese encephalitis (inactivated vaccine 5th dose or live attenuated vaccine 2nd dose). Female students must additionally receive the first dose of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the Ministry of Education, local governments, and principals of elementary and middle schools verify the completion of vaccinations according to relevant laws. Guardians of children entering elementary and middle schools should check vaccination records on the Vaccination Helper website or mobile app and if vaccinations are incomplete, they must complete them at designated medical institutions.
If the vaccination is not registered electronically, guardians should request the medical institution where the vaccination was administered to register it electronically. If there is a contraindication to vaccination, the diagnosed medical institution should be asked to register the contraindication electronically, and in such cases, vaccination is not required.
Individuals who have experienced severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) after vaccination, or who developed encephalopathy within 7 days after receiving the pertussis vaccine, as well as immunodeficient persons or users of immunosuppressants, are considered contraindicated for vaccination. Conditions such as atopy, egg allergy, or high fever are not considered contraindications.
