[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Jane Campion's Netflix film "The Power of the Dog" received the most nominations at the U.S. Oscars. Among the 10 Best Picture nominees, five were streaming films from online video services (OTT).
At the 94th Academy Awards nominations announced on the 8th (local time) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), "The Power of the Dog" was nominated in 12 categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
Having won the Best Director award at last year's Venice International Film Festival, "The Power of the Dog" is an adaptation of Thomas Savage's 1967 novel of the same name, depicting the story of brothers running a large ranch in Montana, USA, during the 1920s.
Director Jane Campion made history as the first female director to be nominated twice for the Oscar for Best Director, having previously been nominated in 1994 for the film "The Piano" (1993).
Since the pandemic caused fluctuations in theaters and OTT content gained popularity, the Oscars began nominating Netflix films starting in 2020, but no streaming film from OTT has yet won Best Picture.
AP News observed, "No streaming service has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture, but this year it is highly likely to break one of Hollywood's last barriers."
Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic "Dune" received 10 nominations including Best Cinematography, Visual Effects, and Sound. The film portrays a massive war over the desert planet Arrakis, the universe's most valuable resource production site, and the legendary messiah Paul's great journey.
Steven Spielberg's musical film "West Side Story" and Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast" each received seven nominations.
Following Bong Joon-ho, who won four Oscars in 2020 for "Parasite," Ryusuke Hamaguchi, one of Asia's most notable filmmakers from Japan, earned major nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for "Drive My Car." The film, based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, won the Best Screenplay award at last year's 74th Cannes Film Festival.
The Best Picture race includes "The Power of the Dog," "Dune," "Belfast," "West Side Story," "CODA," "Don't Look Up," "Licorice Pizza," "King Richard," and "Nightmare Alley."
Best Actor nominees are Javier Bardem ("Being the Ricardos"), Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Power of the Dog"), Andrew Garfield ("Tick, Tick... Boom!"), Will Smith ("King Richard"), and Denzel Washington ("The Tragedy of Macbeth").
Best Actress contenders include Jessica Chastain ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"), Olivia Colman ("The Lost Daughter"), Pen?lope Cruz ("Parallel Mothers"), Nicole Kidman ("Being the Ricardos"), and Kristen Stewart ("Spencer").
For Best International Feature Film, the nominees are "Drive My Car" (Japan), "Where Is Anne Frank" (Denmark), "The Hand of God" (Italy), "Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom" (Bhutan), and "Everyone Else Is Dead" (Norway).
