[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 7th that, following the enforcement of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act on the 27th of last month, it is focusing on strengthening investigative capabilities by establishing a response system centered on the Safety Accident Investigation Task Force of the Violent Crime Investigation Unit.
The Serious Accidents Punishment Act classifies incidents causing worker fatalities or other damages at major industrial sites as "serious industrial accidents," and those causing harm to citizens as "serious citizen accidents." It allows for the punishment of business owners and management officials who fail to fulfill their obligations to ensure safety and health.
According to the Jeonnam Police Agency, to conduct focused and specialized investigations into major safety accidents, they have reinforced the investigative personnel of the Safety Accident Investigation Team and standardized the response plan for large-scale safety accident investigations into a manual. This has enabled not only the provincial dedicated investigation team but also frontline stations to prepare for the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. Furthermore, through repeated training exercises, they have ensured thorough preparation for investigations related to serious accidents.
The Safety Accident Investigation Team has adjusted its work assignments to focus on investigating major safety accidents such as serious accidents. In principle, cases under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act will be exclusively handled by the provincial police agency’s specialized investigation team, and depending on the case, investigations into medical accidents involving multiple casualties will also be conducted concurrently.
Additionally, to strengthen specialized personnel, the agency plans to continuously expand the deployment of disaster accident experienced hires and provide support during major safety accidents even when these personnel are assigned to other departments.
