"Claimed 'I got hurt playing alone'... Infant with 3 broken front teeth at daycare, what truth did the CCTV reveal?"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] On the 7th, parents of children attending a daycare center in Yangsan-si, Gyeongnam, held a press conference, claiming their children were physically abused by a childcare teacher and urged a thorough investigation and disqualification of the offending teacher.
The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 7th that they have booked and are investigating a daycare childcare teacher in her 50s, identified as A, on charges of violating the Child Abuse Punishment Act and the Child Welfare Act.
According to the police, A is suspected of abusing a 13-month-old female infant under her care at a home daycare center around 12:20 PM on November 30 of last year by kicking her and causing damage to three lower teeth.
Initially, A reportedly explained to the child's parents that “the child was injured after falling while playing alone.”
However, CCTV footage from the daycare center reviewed by the police showed the childcare teacher kicking the children under her care, among other abusive acts.
After reviewing an additional 20 days’ worth of CCTV footage, it was revealed that the teacher physically abused children under two years old by grabbing and pulling their arms, touching their faces, and flicking their heads with her fingers.
So far, six children have been identified by their parents as victims, with approximately 160 suspected abuse incidents reported.
It has been reported that the child with damaged teeth will require years of treatment until the permanent teeth grow in.
The police stated, “We have confirmed abuse of three children under the teacher’s care, and are currently verifying the abuse of the other three through CCTV and other means.”
The daycare center director and other administrators have stated that they were unaware of the abuse.
