Seven Expressway Projects Launched in Incheon... Including Undergrounding of Gyeongin Expressway
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Seven highway construction projects are being promoted in Incheon, which is expected to significantly reduce habitual congestion and traffic density.
On the 7th, Incheon City announced that as the Gyeongin Expressway underground project and the expansion project of the 2nd Gyeongin Line were reflected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2nd Highway Construction Plan' on the 28th of last month, a total of seven highway construction projects are currently underway.
Previously, five projects were underway in Incheon: the Gyeyang?Ganghwa Expressway, the 2nd Metropolitan Area Circular Expressway (Incheon?Ansan), Yeongdong Line expansion (Sorae IC construction), Namdong IC improvement project, and Seochang?Gimpo Expressway.
The total length of these seven projects is 116.7 km, with a total project cost of 7.674 trillion KRW.
The Gyeongin Expressway underground project, with an investment of 2.0041 trillion KRW, will construct a 4-lane underground road (all-vehicle tunnel) over a 19.3 km section from Sinwol IC to Seoincheon IC to Namcheongna IC. Once the underground road is completed, it will be possible to enter the 27 km section from Namcheongna to Yeouido, Seoul in about 17 minutes.
The 2nd Gyeongin Line expansion project will expand the highway width from the existing 6 lanes to 8 lanes over a 20.1 km extension from Munhak IC to Seoksu IC, with an investment of 627 billion KRW.
The Gyeyang?Ganghwa Expressway is a project to construct 4 to 6 lanes over a 31.5 km section from Sangya-dong, Gyeyang-gu to Ganghwa-eup, Ganghwa-gun. A feasibility evaluation service is currently underway. The optimal route will be selected within this year, aiming for completion in 2031.
Also, the 2nd Metropolitan Area Circular Expressway (Incheon?Ansan) is a project connecting the disconnected section from Siwha Narae IC in Siheung-si, Gyeonggi to Namhang in Jung-gu, Incheon (length 19.8 km, width 4 lanes), scheduled for completion in 2029.
The Yeongdong Line expansion (Sorae IC construction) project aims to expand the width from the existing 6 lanes to 10 lanes over a 6.9 km extension from Wolgot to Seochang on the Yeongdong Expressway, and construct Sorae IC connecting Cheongneung-daero and Yeongdong Line (length 1.2 km, width 1 lane), targeting completion in 2026.
The Namdong IC improvement project has been conducting a preliminary feasibility study since last month, and the Seochang?Gimpo Expressway, a project connecting Seochang JCT to Gimpo TG (length 18.27 km, width 4 to 6 lanes), is scheduled to start construction next year and be completed in 2028.
