1.5 Billion Tons of Waste Processed Over 30 Years at Sudogwon Landfill Site... Seoul City Accounts for 55%
Gyeonggi 28.5%, Incheon 16.5%... Construction Waste 39.3% 'Highest'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] It has been revealed that the amount of waste processed at the Sudogwon Landfill Site over the past 30 years has reached 158.71 million tons.
According to the Sudogwon Landfill Site Management Corporation on the 3rd, the proportion of waste brought in by city and province is highest in Seoul at 55% (87.29 million tons), followed by Gyeonggi Province at 28.5% (45.28 million tons), and Incheon at 16.5% (26.13 million tons).
By type, construction waste accounted for the largest share at 39.3% (62.46 million tons). This was followed by household waste at 35.9% (57.06 million tons), other business site waste at 17.1% (27.09 million tons), sewage sludge at 5% (7.99 million tons), and food waste wastewater at 2.6% (4.10 million tons).
The ratio by city and province calculated as the amount of waste brought in per capita relative to the population each year over 30 years is Incheon 336 kg (42.4%), Seoul 281 kg (35.5%), and Gyeonggi 175 kg (22.1%) in order.
The first day waste was brought into the Sudogwon Landfill Site was February 10, 1992, when household waste from the Gyeonggi area was received. In the same year, industrial waste was brought in June, sewage and water treatment sludge in August, and household waste from Seoul and Incheon began to be brought in November.

A representative from the Sudogwon Landfill Site Management Corporation stated, "At the new waste landfill site being promoted by Incheon City on Yeongheungdo, only incineration ash from household waste (28.5%) is planned to be landfilled," adding, "There is also a need to plan for the treatment of construction waste (43.3%), other business site waste (19.5%), sewage sludge (4.7%), and food waste wastewater (4.0%), which account for 71.5% of the waste brought into the Sudogwon Landfill Site."
