Seongdong-gu Majang Livestock Market Arcade Renovation Completed
From the end of this month, the 571m-long, 3986㎡ area roof connecting Market Nammun~Seomun~Bukmun will be fully replaced... Creating a comfortable environment with stronger roofing materials, increased ceiling height for better lighting and ventilation functions
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (District Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will begin the replacement construction of the arcade at Majang Livestock Market by the end of this month to create a safe and pleasant market environment.
Through this construction, the roofing material covering a length of 571m and an area of 3,986㎡ connecting the market's south, west, and north gates will be completely replaced. The aging arcade roof will be dismantled and newly installed with a 16T double-layer panel for enhanced strength, raising the ceiling height by up to 1m to secure natural lighting and strengthen ventilation under the arcade.
Drainage facilities will be significantly improved, including repairs and additional installation of eaves gutters in leakage sections. Thorough removal of corrosion and repainting of the existing steel frame will also be carried out. The existing emergency exit guide lights will be replaced with highly visible emergency exit signs to ensure safety in case of fire.
This project, funded with a total budget of 1.5 billion KRW secured through the '2021 Seoul Metropolitan Government Traditional Market Facility Modernization Support Project' competition, actively reflects the opinions of market merchants and will proceed through design services aiming for completion in April.
Majang Livestock Market, covering an area of 116,150㎡ with about 2,000 stores, is a representative wholesale and retail market specializing in livestock products, handling over 60% of livestock distribution in the metropolitan area, and is a famous spot in Seongdong with over 2 million annual visitors.
Earlier in November, Seongdong-gu enacted and promulgated an ordinance on environmental improvement around Majang Livestock Market, systematically addressing odor reduction and other environmental improvements. The district plans to further focus on improving the facilities and environment of Majang Livestock Market through this arcade replacement construction.
