US House Foreign Affairs Chair, "Kim Jong-un Should Sign the Declaration of End of War"
Chairman Gregory Mix Supports South Korean Government's Push for Declaration of End of War
Urges North Korea to Adopt a Progressive Attitude
[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, "I hope Kim Jong-un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, will sign the declaration of the end of the war."
Chairman Meeks made this statement on the 8th (local time) at a political fundraising event for Korean-American voters held in Long Island, New York, regarding the current deadlock in the denuclearization negotiations on the Korean Peninsula.
Meeks' remarks called for a proactive attitude from North Korea, which has not engaged in talks related to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but it is noteworthy that he publicly expressed support for the declaration of the end of the war being promoted by the South Korean government.
He evaluated the declaration of the end of the war as "a very important initiative to officially end the war, create an opportunity toward unification, and allow separated families to reunite." Although he said the current situation is not easy, he added, "The solution must be diplomatic."
Chairman Meeks described the behind-the-scenes talks, rather than high-level dialogue, as "B-level diplomacy," and mentioned that related countries are also in contact behind the scenes regarding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He then expressed hope that "President Moon Jae-in is trying to achieve results related to peace on the Korean Peninsula before the end of his term, but even if he does not succeed, his successor should continue the dialogue." He further emphasized, "The United States will not give up efforts for dialogue together with South Korea."
