With the persistent spread of COVID-19 causing most nationwide sunrise events to be canceled and parking lots at popular sunrise spots closed, many people eager to see the "new year" are left disappointed. Gyeongbuk Province, which faces the east where the sun rises, has stepped in to help.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is home to Dokdo, where the sun rises first in Korea, as well as popular sunrise spots like Pohang, Yeongdeok, and Uljin that attract large crowds every year. The cancellation of sunrise events has brought great disappointment to local residents and visitors alike.
To ease the locals' regrets on January 1, 2022, and to share the first sunrise of the Year of the Black Tiger online, the province will broadcast the sunrise scenery live on its official YouTube channel, "Boiso TV."
The province plans to start the broadcast at 6:30 a.m., waiting for the scheduled sunrise at 7:32 a.m., to share New Year's hopes and wishes with the local community.
In the upcoming new year, the first sunrise will be captured at Hupo Port in Uljin, and in 2023, the sunrise will be filmed at Eupcheon Port in Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju.
