China Warns of Stronger Measures to Crush Taiwan Independence Provocations
[Asia Economy, reporter Lee Changhwan] China has warned that it will take stronger measures against Taiwan's efforts toward independence.
On December 29, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China, stated, "We will crush provocations for Taiwan independence with even stronger measures."
At a press conference that day, Ma said regarding the outlook for cross-strait relations in the coming year, "We will thoroughly understand and fully implement the Party's strategy for resolving the Taiwan issue in the new era."
He continued, "Pursuing Taiwan independence is a dead end, and colluding with external forces to divide the nation will lead to an abyss from which there is no return." He emphasized, "One must rein in the horse at the edge of the cliff and stop before it is too late (xian ai neuma)."
'Xian ai neuma' is a term meaning to come to one's senses only when in danger, and is often used by China when warning other countries of strong retaliation.
