[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Park Seong-hyun) announced on the 29th that it will officially commence the construction project of the first fully automated container terminal in Korea starting in 2022.
The authority plans to proceed with the project from 2022 to 2026 following the preliminary feasibility study approval on the 26th for the "Port Automation Testbed Construction Project," which involves a total investment of 691.5 billion KRW (50% government, 50% authority) at the Gwangyang Port 3-2 phase berth.
In addition, prior to the full-scale project implementation, a Gwangyang Port Automation Task Force will be formed to decide on key pending issues.
The task force will consist of government authorities, national research institutes, and domestic and international experts from various fields to make optimal decisions through collective intelligence.
Furthermore, the authority plans to carry out multifaceted promotional activities for this project by producing various promotional materials to distribute within the local community and to inform the public about the Gwangyang Port automated terminal through social networking services (SNS).
President Park Seong-hyun of the authority stated, "This project is the first in Korea to establish full unmanned automation across all areas within a container terminal (ship container loading/unloading, container transfer, stacking, and dispatch). We will proceed without any setbacks through organic cooperation with related organizations and local governments, and through the construction of a smart port, we aim to develop it into the world's best port beyond Korea."
