Strike Involving About 1,650 Workers Causes Delivery Delays for 400,000 Items
On the 28th, CJ Logistics delivery volumes piled up at the Seongnam Terminal of CJ Logistics in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, as CJ Logistics delivery workers affiliated with the National Courier Workers' Union began an indefinite general strike to urge the implementation of a social agreement to prevent death from overwork. Among the approximately 20,000 CJ Logistics delivery workers, about 2,500 are union members, and it is reported that around 1,700 union members with bargaining rights will participate in this strike. View original imageThe CJ Logistics branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Delivery Workers' Union has entered an indefinite general strike starting from the 28th, and the feared 'logistics crisis' has become a reality. Some delivery agency offices nationwide have decided to suspend parcel pickups due to a shortage of workers caused by the strike, unable to handle the overwhelming volume of deliveries. Consumers in the affected areas are expected to experience inconvenience as it will be difficult to have items delivered via CJ Logistics for the time being.
On the 29th, the CJ Logistics Delivery Agency Union decided to suspend parcel acceptance from 7 a.m. at some agency offices mainly in Gwangju-si and Seongnam in Gyeonggi Province, as well as in Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Changwon, and Gwangju regions. This is a temporary measure to minimize new damages as delivery volumes pile up, especially at agencies with many union members participating in the strike.
According to the union's tally, about 1,650 delivery workers nationwide participated in the strike as of the previous day, causing delivery disruptions mainly around Changwon Seongsan Terminal and Seongnam city areas excluding Bundang-gu.
Currently, the affected agencies are attempting deliveries mainly with non-union delivery workers and personnel dispatched from headquarters, but it is insufficient to handle all new volumes. Due to this suspension of parcel acceptance, not only general consumers but also corporate clients such as online shopping malls are expected to face increased delivery disruptions, raising concerns about greater damages.
In particular, as the delivery workers' union is claiming the agreement made between the Social Agreement Organization and the Overwork Death Countermeasures Committee to be fundamentally invalid and has launched an indefinite strike, the number of agencies suspending parcel acceptance nationwide is expected to increase over time.
