Samsung Electronics' Han Jong-hee and Kyung Kye-hyun Selected as Full Members of the National Academy of Engineering
Recognized for Pioneering Development and Commercialization of Innovative Technology
Key Industry Leaders from Samsung, LG, and Others Listed as Regular and General Members
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hye-young] Han Jong-hee, Vice Chairman and Head of Samsung Electronics DX Division, and Kyung Kye-hyun, President and Head of Samsung Electronics DS Division, have been jointly selected as regular members of the Korean Academy of Engineering.
The Academy of Engineering announced on the 28th that a total of 45 people, including Vice Chairman Han and President Kyung, were selected as regular members for 2022.
Regular members are selected from general members of the Academy of Engineering who have made significant contributions to national development through outstanding research achievements and innovative technology development in companies, universities, and research institutes. After a 10-month multi-stage review process, the Academy finally selected 21 members from academia and 24 from industry as regular members.
Among the industry regular members, a large number of Samsung Electronics executives, including Vice Chairman Han and President Kyung, were included.
Vice Chairman Han was recognized for his contributions to the development of innovative TVs applying technologies such as Quantum Dot (QD) and 8K TV, as well as for developing and integrating world-first technologies. President Kyung, recently appointed as head of Samsung Electronics DS Division, was highly evaluated for leading the world’s first development of flash memory (V-NAND), creating the 3D memory market, and launching the world’s first highest-capacity advanced multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) products, thereby strengthening domestic technological competitiveness.
Former Samsung Electronics IM Division Head (President) Ko Dong-jun, who stepped down from frontline management, was also selected as a regular member for contributing to the world’s first commercialization of 5G technology. Jang Eun-joo, Fellow at Samsung Electronics Advanced Institute of Technology, was recognized for her contributions to mass production of eco-friendly quantum dots and was included in the regular member list after publishing two papers in the international journal Nature. Kim Sung-chul, Head of Small and Medium Display Business at Samsung Display, was acknowledged for leading the mass production of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays.
Other regular members selected include KT President Koo Hyun-mo, Korea Aerospace Research Institute Director Lee Sang-ryul, SK President Jin Gyo-won, Capstone Partners CEO Song Eun-kang, and Hyundai Motor Vice President Kim Se-hoon.
A total of 84 new general members were selected, including 16 from industry. Among them were Kwon Bong-seok, Vice Chairman of LG Corp., Kim Hak-dong, Vice Chairman of POSCO, Lee Jung-bae, President of Samsung Electronics Memory Division, Choi Si-young, President of Samsung Electronics Foundry Division, Lee Jae-seung, President of Samsung Electronics Home Appliance Division, and Choi Joo-sun, President of Samsung Display. Also included as general members were Bae Kyung-hoon, Head of LG AI Research Institute, Oh Se-gi, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics H&A Research Center, and Kim Dong-won, Executive Director of LG Electronics H&A Business Division.
With this new member selection, the Korean Academy of Engineering now has 294 regular members and 360 general members.

Kwon Oh-kyung, President of the Academy of Engineering and Professor at Hanyang University, said, "We selected members based on strict screening criteria and made efforts to actively discover outstanding young talents in convergence, advanced, and new technology fields."
