[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A biological mother who abandoned a newborn baby with the umbilical cord attached in a medical collection box in Osan-si, Gyeonggi Province, causing the infant's death, has been sent to the prosecution on charges of abusing her two other sons in the past.
The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 27th that they had sent Ms. A, a woman in her 20s, to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment on charges of neglect under the Child Welfare Act.
Ms. A is suspected of leaving her one-year-old and three-year-old sons unattended in a rented room in Changwon-si, Gyeongnam Province, on May 28th and going out.
At that time, the landlord living on another floor heard the babies crying and reported it to the police. The police stated that when they arrived at the scene, the babies were left unattended in a dirty environment with garbage piled up.
During the police investigation, Ms. A stated, "I could not clean properly because of back pain."
The police believe that earlier this year, after separating from her husband, Ms. A moved down to Changwon, where her parents live, and frequently went out leaving the babies unattended.
Earlier, the Osan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested Ms. A on charges of abandoning a newborn baby boy she had given birth to in a clothing collection box on the street in Gwoldong, Osan, and fleeing the scene.
Ms. A is suspected of abandoning the newborn baby in a clothing collection box on the street in Gwoldong, Osan-si, Gyeonggi Province, at around 5:20 p.m. on the 18th and fleeing.
The baby was found by a used clothes collector at around 11:30 p.m. the next day (19th). At the time of discovery, the baby was naked with the umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a towel, and was deceased. After analyzing CCTV footage near the clothing collection box, the police arrested Ms. A at her home in Osan-si on the 23rd.
During the police investigation, Ms. A reportedly stated, "I abandoned the baby in the clothing collection box to hide the fact that I gave birth without my husband's knowledge."

Meanwhile, Ms. A's husband, Mr. B, told Yonhap News that he was unaware of his wife's pregnancy. He said, "Due to circumstances, we had been living apart for several months, but we reunited in October. It seems my wife was pregnant with another man's baby during that time. Because she thoroughly hid her pregnancy, even while living together, I only thought her body shape had changed and had no idea she was carrying a child."
