Four areas?Jeongseon in Gangwon-do, Gongju in Chungcheongnam-do, Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Yeongam in Jeollanam-do?have been newly designated as growth promotion zones. A total of 60 billion KRW in national funds will be invested in these areas to revitalize specialized industries and improve living conditions.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 28th that it has given final approval to the amendments to regional development plans submitted by six provinces, including Gangwon-do, following a review by the National Land Policy Committee.

Regional development plans play a role in promoting nationally balanced development led by local governments by preparing mid- to long-term development strategies and receiving support from the central government.

The Ministry evaluates population decline and financial conditions every five years and designates 70 cities and counties requiring support as growth promotion zones.

Jeongseon, Gongju, Andong, and Yeongam, newly included as growth promotion zones, will each receive 15 billion KRW in national funds. Eleven regional development projects will be implemented to activate specialized industries and tourism, improve accessibility, and enhance living conditions in each area.

In Jeongseon, a connecting bridge will be installed between Bongyang-ri and Aesan-ri in Jeongseon-eup to link the administrative and commercial center with the traditional culture center into a tourism network. Additionally, projects such as the connection road between National Route 38 and County Road 7, a long-awaited project in the abandoned mining area, and the maintenance of County Road 3 will be carried out.

In Gongju, the Baekje cultural content will be utilized to promote the Gongju cultural tourism site project, aiming to increase tourists and revitalize the local economy. In Andong, the old Andong Station and railway site will be used to install connecting roads and linear plazas.

In Yeongam, infrastructure will be expanded to create a themed tourist destination linked with the ongoing experiential leisure facilities at the regional tourist resource, Wolchulsan Tourist Site.

Baek Won-guk, Director of National Land Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "With this amendment to the regional development plans, regional development projects will be promoted more swiftly, contributing to the revitalization of local vitality," and added, "We will actively support these efforts through continuous project management and consulting to achieve tangible results."
