Continued Visits to Memorialize Abandoned Infant Found in Osan Clothing Donation Bin
[Asia Economy (Osan) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] A wave of mourning is spreading through the local community for newborn baby A, who was found dead with the umbilical cord still attached in a clothing collection box in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, on the 19th.
At the time, baby A was discovered naked and wrapped in a blanket by a collection worker at a clothing collection box in Gwoldong. The police are investigating the exact cause of death based on the autopsy results of baby A, who was a premature infant weighing 2 kg at the time of death.
Since the sad news about baby A became known, a wave of mourning has continued in front of the clothing collection box, mainly by residents of the Osan area, starting from the 23rd.
The Osan City Maehwa Volunteer Group prepared a memorial altar and mourning placards. Passersby stop briefly in front of the memorial altar to pay their respects to baby A.
Park Mi-soon, head of the Osan City Maehwa Volunteer Group, said, "As a mother raising children, my heart aches, so I prepared a memorial altar with the volunteer members to mourn baby A," and added, "I hope Osan City will take responsibility for and support baby A's funeral."
However, Osan City has not yet decided on the funeral arrangements for baby A, who is currently kept in a hospital freezer due to having no family to take custody. Although current law stipulates that local governments must provide funerals and cremations for unclaimed persons, baby A’s birth has not been registered, making it difficult to conduct a funeral for an unclaimed person.
