According to local media and police, the fire occurred around 3 a.m. on the three-story passenger ferry Obijan-10 traveling on the Suganda River in the southern Jhalakati area. A Jhalakati official told the Dhaka Tribune, "So far, 39 bodies have been recovered from the vessel that caught fire."

Most of the deceased died from the fire, and some are reported to have lost their lives after jumping into the water. About 70 injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities said the death toll could rise as many passengers suffered burns. It is estimated that 500 to 800 people were on board the ferry, far exceeding its capacity of 310.
