Boseong-gun Selected as Best County in 'Creating Jeonnam in the Forest' Evaluation
Goal of Creating 10 Million Urban Forest Trees... Distinctive Forestry Administration Stands Out
[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Jeollanam-do Boseong-gun (Governor Kim Cheol-woo) announced on the 22nd that it was selected as the best institution in the ‘2021 Making Jeonnam a Forest’ evaluation hosted by Jeollanam-do.
Jeollanam-do evaluates local governments every year on policy development and excellent policies in forest conservation fields such as forest maintenance in line with low-carbon green growth.
Since 2018, Boseong-gun has pursued advanced forest administration to create one million urban trees, starting with parks and walking trails closely related to residents’ lives and achieving harmony between forests and cultural resources.
In this evaluation, high scores were received for projects such as the excavation and maintenance of the Obongsan Gudeuljang quarry and horse cart road, which had been buried in the mountains for over 40 years and designated as a national forest cultural asset by the Korea Forest Service, and the creation of the Haepyeong Lake Garden Shilli-gil trail utilizing the beautiful lakeside forest.
Additionally, in the Boseong-eup area, using the Korea Railroad Corporation’s vacant land, projects such as the creation of the Nokchagol Boseong Local Market resident participation forest, the Dongyuncheon ecological stream restoration project, and the fine dust blocking forest were implemented. In Beolgyo-eup, the Seongeun Park project honoring the righteous militia leader An Gyu-hong, reflecting the area’s distinctive character as a hometown of loyalty, also received favorable evaluations.
In particular, the fine dust blocking forest is being established over a total distance of 2.1 km from Usan Intersection to Jangri Intersection in Boseong-eup.
Boseong-gun expects the fine dust blocking forest to serve as a natural solution to odor complaints caused by livestock farms and to play the role of an ‘odor reduction forest.’
A county official said, “We will vigorously promote the creation of one million urban trees by discovering and utilizing forests and vacant lands around the living areas of Boseong residents to the fullest extent, so that residents can enjoy forests in their daily lives, savor nature, and lead healthy lives.”
Meanwhile, by identifying trees to be removed at large construction sites commissioned by the county and actively using them in the creation of urban forests within Boseong-eup, 1,172 trees of 10 species have been preserved so far, saving budget as well.
