Gwangju Nambu Fire Station Prevents Major Fire Damage with Standalone Alarm Detector
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Nambu Fire Station (Chief Lee Jeong-ja) announced on the 22nd that a fire broke out in a house in Songha-dong, but the installed standalone smoke detector alarm sounded, preventing major damage.
According to the fire station, the fire started when a cigarette ember ignited toilet paper inside a trash can in the bathroom of the house. Although the fire could have spread significantly, the resident heard the alarm from the standalone smoke detector activated by the smoke, used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire at an early stage, and quickly reported the incident.
Residential fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and standalone smoke detectors, must be installed mandatorily in single-family homes, multi-family houses, multiplex houses, and row houses according to Article 8 of the "Act on Fire Prevention, Installation and Maintenance of Firefighting Facilities, and Safety Management."
A fire station official stated, “This case confirmed the importance of residential fire safety equipment (fire extinguishers and standalone smoke detectors). We strongly urge everyone to install residential fire safety equipment, which greatly contributes to home safety, and actively participate.”
