Wando-gun Progresses Smoothly with Urban Regeneration Project, Wins 'Special Award'

Efforts to Revitalize the Old Downtown and Improve Residents' Living Conditions

[Wando＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) received a special award for ‘Outstanding Local Government in Urban Regeneration’ at the 8th Urban Regeneration Metropolitan Governance Forum held on the 16th, hosted by the Urban Regeneration Governance Forum during the 6th Urban Regeneration Hanmadang event in 2021.

According to the county on the 21st, since last year, a total of 37.5 billion KRW has been secured through selection for the Urban Regeneration New Deal project led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, actively promoting projects such as revitalization of the old downtown area.

Despite poor local financial conditions, the county has been dedicated to improving residents’ living conditions by implementing projects to revitalize island areas and creating children’s play and care spaces, which led to receiving the special award.

The old downtown revitalization projects currently underway in Wando-gun include four projects totaling 42.4 billion KRW: Wando-eup Jungang Village Urban Regeneration New Deal project, (former) Wando Cultural Center Urban Regeneration Recognition project, Noduri area demand-tailored project, and Hangdong-ri vulnerable area living condition improvement project.

Additionally, through small-scale regeneration projects, flower gardens and village cafes were created in Wando-eup, a youth center was established, and seawater foot bath facilities were installed to improve residents’ living environments.

The old downtown revitalization projects will continue to be promoted in order of priority, targeting Geumil-eup, Nohwa-eup, and Gunoe-myeon following Wando-eup.

Meanwhile, Wando-gun actively responded to urban regeneration-related public contests, achieving remarkable success this year with the selection of projects such as the Seongnae and Namseong Village vulnerable area living condition improvement project in Wando-eup, Urban Regeneration New Deal recognition project, and preliminary urban regeneration project.

Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “We will do our best to promote urban regeneration projects so that residents can enjoy a happier life in a better environment,” adding, “I hope that through urban regeneration projects, improvements in living conditions will contribute to population inflow and revitalization of the local economy.”
