Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Orders Project for Channel Maintenance and Dredged Material Disposal Site Construction at Gwangyang Port
Dredged Soil Disposal Site 1.5 Times the Size of Yeouido to Be Developed into an Industrial Cluster
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 19th that it will launch the "Gwangyang Port Wide-area Dredged Soil Disposal Site Construction Project" to manage dredged soil generated from the channel dredging work within Gwangyang Port.
The Ministry is carrying out maintenance projects such as dredging channels within Gwangyang Port to enable large vessels to enter and exit quickly and safely, in preparation for the trend of larger ships and the increase in cargo volume at Gwangyang Port. Additionally, the third-phase disposal site for dredged soil generated from channel dredging work at Gwangyang Port is expected to reach capacity by 2026. Therefore, by investing 386.4 billion KRW by then, the Ministry plans to create an additional disposal site to manage the dredged soil.
Furthermore, once the dredged soil disposal is completed by 2033, approximately 4.2 million square meters of land?about 1.5 times the size of Yeouido?will be supplied in the hinterland of Gwangyang Port. This land can be developed into an industrial cluster concentrating functions such as petroleum and chemical industries, marine new industries, and marine and fisheries research and development projects.
