Gyeonggi Region's 'School Democracy Index' Scores 4.11 out of 5 Points
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The democracy index among faculty, students, and parents in schools in the Gyeonggi region was found to be 4.11 out of 5 points.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on the 16th that from September 16 to November 5, it conducted an online and mobile survey on 24 questions regarding the realization of democracy and autonomous culture within schools, targeting 2,574 elementary, middle, and high schools in the province, including 471,504 students, parents, and faculty members. The average score was calculated as 4.11 out of 5 points.
The average scores by educational stakeholders were 4.34 points for faculty, 4.03 points for parents, and 3.97 points for students.
Among faculty, 'sharing democratic values (4.53 points)' was rated the highest, while students and parents gave high scores to 'protection of minority rights (students 4.31 points, parents 4.25 points)'.
The lowest scoring indicators were 'freedom of expression (4.2 points)' for faculty, 'voluntary organization formation and activities (3.75 points)' for parents, and 'opportunities to cultivate autonomous capabilities (3.57 points)' for students.
In some indicators such as 'curriculum practicing citizenship,' 'curriculum created together by the community,' and 'curriculum participating in society,' there was a perception gap between faculty and students, with score differences ranging from 0.47 to 0.58 points.
A Gyeonggi Office of Education official stated, "Based on the democracy index survey results, we plan to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each school and provide consulting on areas for improvement or supplementation."
The Gyeonggi Office of Education has been measuring the school democracy index since 2015 to diagnose school organizational culture and find solutions. Starting this year, the survey results have been expressed on a 5-point scale instead of the previous 100-point scale.

The survey was not conducted in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19, and the average democracy index in 2019 was 79.65 points.
