Geochang-gun, Average Safety Level 2.83... 3rd Place Among Gyeongnam Counties
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 15th, Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam announced that its regional safety index, published by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, scored an average of 2.83, ranking 3rd among counties in the province.
The regional safety index has been published every December since 2015 by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety based on the previous year's statistics to strengthen local governments' accountability for safety management and reduce fatalities from safety accidents.
The index is calculated based on six areas: traffic accidents, fires, crime, daily safety, suicide, and infectious diseases, and evaluates safety levels in five grades. A lower grade indicates a safer condition.
In the county, the regional safety index improved by one grade in both crime and suicide compared to the previous year, recording grade 3 in crime and grade 2 in suicide. The fire and infectious disease sectors maintained the same grades as last year, at grade 2 and grade 3 respectively.
On the other hand, the traffic sector recorded grade 5, and daily safety grade 2, each dropping one grade from the previous year. The low ranking in the traffic sector is due to the number of traffic accident deaths per 10,000 people being 18 last year, which is higher than the Gyeongnam average of 9.8.
In response, the county is cooperating with the Geochang Police Station to install 21 additional traffic enforcement CCTVs and is investing 6.87 billion KRW in traffic environment improvement projects such as improvements to child protection zones, elderly protection zones, and the installation of roundabouts to prevent traffic accidents. They expect the regional safety index grade to rise further next year.
