NIS Warns of Social Turmoil Due to Fake News Ahead of Presidential and Local Elections
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The National Intelligence Service (NIS) forecasted that society could experience turmoil due to fake news ahead of next year's presidential election (March) and local elections (June).
In the 'Key Characteristics of Cyber Threats This Year and Outlook for Next Year' report released on the 15th, the NIS stated, "South Korea faces the presidential election in March and local elections in June next year, raising concerns that fake news and the dissemination of sensitive public information could cause social unrest."

The NIS also projected that amid the US-China conflict manifesting as cyber disputes, if South Korea sides with one party, it could face hacking attacks from opposing factions ahead of next year's presidential election. Furthermore, with the inauguration of the new government next year, hacking groups are expected to intensify attacks aimed at gathering information related to the new North Korea policy and security issues.
