The city announced on the 15th that it has started a research project on this matter.
The research project focuses on establishing a comprehensive plan to underground the 13 km section of the Gyeongbu Line and the 11 km section of the Honam Line passing through downtown Daejeon, exploring ways to utilize the resulting above-ground idle land, and developing station areas such as Sintanjin Station, Daejeon Marshalling Yard, Daejeon Station, Seodaejeon Station, and Gasuwon Station.
The research project will receive 1.5 billion KRW in national funding and is scheduled to proceed until the first half of 2023. If the underground project is actually implemented, the city expects the project cost to be approximately 10.2 trillion KRW.
Furthermore, the city anticipates that undergrounding the Gyeongbu and Honam Line sections will resolve noise, vibration, and traffic inconveniences along the railway, and promote the restoration of a green ecosystem within the city by utilizing the idle land.
Above all, the city explains that the underground project will connect the city center, which has been divided by railway tracks for the past 100 years, securing urban competitiveness while laying the foundation for balanced regional development.
