[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] On the 14th, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred 41 km southwest of Seogwipo City, Jeju. It is the largest earthquake this year.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the earthquake occurred at 5:19:14 PM on the same day, 41 km southwest of Seogwipo City, Jeju, with the epicenter at 33.09°N latitude and 126.16°E longitude. The depth of the earthquake was 17 km.
The initially observed magnitude was 5.3, but based on manually analyzed data, the magnitude was downgraded to 4.9. The initial observation time refers to the time when the fast-moving seismic P-wave arrived.
A KMA official explained, "We are monitoring for additional aftershocks, and there is a possibility of damage in areas with soft ground," adding, "This is the first time an earthquake of this magnitude has occurred in Seogwipo."
The Fire Agency stated, "So far, no damage has been reported related to the earthquake off the coast of Jeju, but there have been many reports nationwide of earthquake detection."
The earthquake that occurred on this day is the largest magnitude earthquake to occur on the Korean Peninsula this year. It ranks as the 11th largest earthquake ever recorded on the Korean Peninsula. It is also the largest magnitude earthquake this year in South Korea and its surrounding waters.
