[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 14th that it will jointly host the '2021 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit' with the OGP Secretariat from the 15th to the 17th.
At this global summit, under the slogan "Open Recovery, Open Renewal," measures for recovery and leap forward from global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed. Over 200 speakers including heads of state and ministers from various countries, journalists, domestic and international civic groups, and experts will participate.
This event is hosted by Korea as the 11th chair country of the OGP. Korea was elected as the OGP chair country for a two-year term in recognition of the efforts and achievements made by the government and citizens in realizing democracy and open government.
The opening ceremony of the global summit will begin with an opening address by Minister Jeon Hae-cheol and a congratulatory speech by President Moon Jae-in. Eleven heads of state, including U.S. President Joe Biden, will participate to emphasize efforts to spread open government, followed by special speeches from UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The main program of this global summit, the plenary session that encapsulates the core values of the OGP, will be held over three days with the themes of ▲ strengthening the civic domain and public participation ▲ anti-corruption ▲ inclusive digital innovation, which are the visions announced by the Republic of Korea government as the chair country to all member countries worldwide.
Special sessions have been prepared on urgent topics requiring global cooperation to overcome the current global crises and prepare for the future. The Recovery and Leap Forward session from COVID-19 will discuss the cooperation directions among "government-civil society-international community" needed in this era where disasters such as climate change and infectious diseases have become commonplace. A Youth Summit will also be held where the global youth delegation proposes policies for the future of open government.
Additionally, various domestic and international committee meetings involving global civic groups, international organizations, member state governments, and the OGP Secretariat will be conducted. Domestic committee meetings are planned and operated proactively by civic groups, academia, and international organizations selected through a public contest process, with 17 meetings including "Digital Society in the Post-COVID-19 Era" operated by the UN Governance Center.
At the closing ceremony, the current chair group including Korea will hand over the chair role to the next chair group, including the Italian government and Aiden Iyakuzi from Tanzania.
