[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] South Korea and Australia adopted the "Korea-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Joint Statement" on the occasion of the summit between President Moon Jae-in and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The joint statement, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the first Australian state visit by a head of state in 12 years, elevated the relationship to a "comprehensive strategic partnership" and included specific cooperation plans in three major areas: ▲strategic and security cooperation ▲economic, innovation, and technology cooperation ▲promotion of people-to-people exchanges.
In strategic and security cooperation, the statement institutionalized cooperation in the defense industry sector, strengthened collaboration in defense industry supply chains, and enhanced cooperation in defense science and technology.
It also emphasized existing agreements such as the Panmunjom Declaration, supported the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, and reinforced cooperation for building peace on the Korean Peninsula through the South Korean government's efforts to establish a permanent peace regime. Both countries also shared the recognition that stability in the Indo-Pacific depends on adherence to international law in maritime areas, including the South China Sea.
