US COVID-19 Cumulative Cases Reach 50 Million, Deaths 800,000... 57% of Deaths Occurred This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Major foreign media reported on the 12th (local time) that the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in the United States has reached 50 million, with cumulative deaths reaching 800,000.
According to major foreign media, about 450,000 people, accounting for 57% of the total deaths, have died this year.
Although free COVID-19 vaccinations have been implemented nationwide in the U.S., the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant and growing vaccine hesitancy have led to an increase in deaths compared to last year.
In fact, the majority of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. this year are known to be among the unvaccinated.
The upward trend in deaths is also showing signs of accelerating again.
This is a result of the daily new cases, which had been declining for two months, recently turning upward. Since the Thanksgiving holiday at the end of last month, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations has also increased by about 20%.
It took 111 days for the U.S. COVID-19 death toll to rise from 600,000 to 700,000, but only 73 days to increase from 700,000 to 800,000.
Major foreign media reported that between January and November this year, the U.S. had a particularly high COVID-19 death rate per capita compared to other countries, ranking worst among the Group of Seven (G7). The U.S. COVID-19 death rate is three times that of Canada and more than eleven times that of Japan.
The U.S. COVID-19 death rate per capita ranks 30th among the 38 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and is about 1.3 times higher compared to the European Union (EU).
The U.S. population accounts for about 4% of the world’s total, but 19% of the reported COVID-19 cases and 14% of deaths worldwide have occurred in the U.S. Major foreign media reported that the U.S. has the highest number of COVID-19 deaths globally, followed by Brazil and India.
