Governor Andrew Beshear said in an interview with WLKY, a regional station under CNN, that he "knows of more than 50 fatalities" caused by the tornado.
He added that the damage was concentrated in Mayfield City, Graves County, in southwestern Kentucky.
CNN also reported that Governor Beshear declared a state of emergency and deployed the National Guard.
In Mayfield City, workers are trapped in a collapsed candle factory, and authorities are conducting rescue operations, but the power outage is slowing the progress.
