Human Rights Commission's Online Ceremony for the 73rd Anniversary of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights": "Human Rights Are Fundamental Values of Humanity"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea held a ceremony commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the morning of the 10th at the Human Rights Education Center of the Commission in Jung-gu, Seoul.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day is a day to reflect on the meaning and spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed as a common standard for all countries and all people to realize the value of human dignity and respect.
The ceremony proceeded in the following order: ▲ Commemorative speech by Song Doo-hwan, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission ▲ Congratulatory speeches by Park Byeong-seok, Speaker of the National Assembly; Yoo Nam-seok, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court; Kim Boo-kyum, Prime Minister; Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General; and Rosalyn Kroetcher, Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF) ▲ Presentation of the Republic of Korea Human Rights Awards ▲ Screening of congratulatory song video.
Song Doo-hwan, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, stated, "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights expressed the global commitment to establish human rights as a fundamental value of humanity," adding, "The key to overcoming the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic is the spirit of equality and non-discrimination embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

Additionally, this year’s Republic of Korea Human Rights Awards were presented to a total of 10 recipients: one awarded the Order of Civil Merit, one Presidential Citation, three individual awards, and five group awards from the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. The Order of Civil Merit was awarded to Choi Young-mi, representative of the Korean Domestic Workers Association. Representative Choi was recognized for her contributions to improving the human rights of domestic workers, including establishing the 'Female Head of Household Care Job Project Team' immediately after the IMF financial crisis, conducting Korea’s first survey on domestic workers in 2006, participating in the 'Solidarity for Legal Protection of Care Workers' activities in 2010, and efforts toward the enactment of the 'Domestic Workers Act' this year.
