[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Juhee] An incident occurred at a middle school in Jeonju, Jeonbuk, where a male student assaulted a female peer while wearing "knuckles" on his hand. The victim, who was hit multiple times, was seriously injured to the point of temporarily losing consciousness due to a concussion.
Experts have suggested that appropriate disciplinary actions by the school and judicial authorities are necessary for perpetrators of school violence incidents.
According to media reports on the 10th, a school violence incident took place at a middle school in Jeonju on the 29th of last month. The male student perpetrator, identified as A, kicked the female victim, B, in the stomach and struck her face with his hand. A also chased after B as she turned away and repeatedly hit her head.
At the time, A was wearing a self-defense item called "knuckles" on his hand. Knuckles are metal rings worn on the fingers to increase striking power, known as an offensive weapon, and are reportedly powerful enough to break roof tiles with slight force.
B, who was struck more than ten times by A’s fist wearing knuckles, suffered bruises on her face and body and was seriously injured, temporarily losing consciousness due to a concussion.
B’s parents expressed in an interview with the media, "Honestly, we are scared that he (A) might retaliate later or seek revenge. She is our only daughter..."

The school also stated that it is difficult to arbitrarily restrict or confiscate dangerous items. A school official said, "Currently, student rights are important, so inspecting belongings is not easy."
However, since guardians have significant concerns about youths possessing items that can cause serious injury if used violently, there are calls for appropriate regulatory measures.
Experts have suggested that more fundamental measures are needed to resolve school violence issues.
Attorney Eunui Lee (Eunui Lee Law Office) said, "It is practically impossible to regulate possession of problematic items. The more fundamental issues need to be addressed," adding, "Basically, to prevent school violence, appropriate punishment and accountability for perpetrators are necessary, but proper actions by schools and judicial authorities are not being adequately implemented. In fact, often no measures are taken."

She continued, "When a serious school violence incident occurs, there must be disciplinary actions from the school and judiciary that hold the perpetrator accountable to this extent," emphasizing, "Primarily, it is important to separate the victim and the perpetrator. A common concern among parents of school violence victims is the fear of further violence. Continuous monitoring for direct or indirect secondary harm is necessary, and if secondary harm occurs, enhanced punishment through disciplinary measures should be implemented."
