Statistics Korea and UNFPA to Hold Healthy Aging Symposium on the 9th
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] On the 9th, Statistics Korea held the '5th Low Fertility and Aging Symposium' via video conference together with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The symposium was held under the theme of 'Determinants of Healthy Aging by Life Cycle.' Representatives from international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), government officials from various countries, and experts gathered to discuss policy directions for a healthy aging society, including nutritional environment, lifestyle, and the role of local communities.
Statistics Korea stated, "The proportion of the global population aged 60 and over is expected to nearly double from 12% in 2015 to 22% in 2025," adding, "Healthy aging is the most important factor in improving the quality of life for the elderly."
Kim Kwangseop, Deputy Director of Statistics Korea, said, "In Korea, the relative poverty rate of the retirement age group (66 years and older) was 43.2% as of 2019, the highest among OECD countries," and added, "Statistics Korea is developing statistics on pension subscription and receipt status by individual and household to provide information necessary for establishing and researching old-age income security and welfare policies."
