Secured 1.8 Billion KRW for New Facility Construction Project

[Kim Hyun＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan) was the only region in Jeollanam-do selected for the 2022 Domestic Wheat Drying and Storage Facility Contest Project.

On the 6th, the Domestic Wheat Drying and Storage Facility project was selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to increase the self-sufficiency rate of domestic wheat, expand cultivation areas, and improve quality by targeting education and consulting companies.

Haenam-gun secured a project budget of 1.8 billion KRW, including 720 million KRW in national funds, and will install a dedicated domestic wheat drying and storage facility at Hyunsan Nonghyup.

In particular, the facility to be installed this time will depart from the existing silo (storage tower) concept and will be installed as a dedicated low-temperature storage facility for wheat to maintain the best quality through precise humidity and temperature control. This latest facility is the first of its kind in Jeollanam-do.

The domestic wheat cultivation area in Haenam-gun is 1,183 hectares, accounting for 19% nationwide, making it the largest production area in the country. Haenam-gun also operates 9 out of 18 domestic wheat education and consulting companies nationwide, making great efforts to secure domestic wheat cultivation areas and manage quality.

Before the project contest, Haenam-gun carefully reviewed the project plan with applicants, county officials, and experts from the application stage. In particular, centered on Hyunsan Nonghyup, a business agreement was signed to jointly promote production and sales with four agricultural cooperatives in the southern region of Haenam-gun (6 towns and townships), receiving much positive feedback from evaluation committee members.

Additionally, Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan and National Assembly member Yoon Jae-gap directly visited related ministries to actively explain that Haenam-gun, as the largest wheat cultivation area, will play a significant role in the national domestic wheat self-sufficiency initiative, ultimately achieving the successful lead of the project.

Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan stated, “The domestic self-sufficiency rate for wheat is 1%, mostly relying on imports, and there are either no or outdated drying and storage facilities for produced wheat, making the increase in cultivation area and quality management urgent. With this project selection, we expect to expand the foundation for producing high-quality domestic wheat and increase self-sufficiency. We will make every effort to promote the project and spare no support for domestic wheat self-sufficiency and quality management.”
