[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Choosing the Best Putter"
‘Putter’.
Among the 14 golf clubs, it is the most frequently used. Even if you take 2 putts per hole, that’s 36 strokes, and amateur golfers naturally take more. This is why choosing the right putter is important. There are two main types: the blade putter with a straight blade and the mallet putter with a half-circle head. Additionally, the head shape and weight, shaft length, and grip thickness all vary. These are factors to consider along with your putting style when selecting a putter.
In terms of shape, there are three types: T-shaped, D-shaped, and L-shaped, with various designs derived from these. The length ranges from 33 inches to 35 inches (for men). The head material includes iron, copper, aluminum, and titanium. Loft and lie angles vary slightly by model. Loft ranges from 2 to 3 degrees, and lie angle from 70 to 71 degrees. Male golfers typically use grips that are 1.1 to 1.3 inches thick.
‘The Hulk’ Bryson DeChambeau (USA) uses a 1.46-inch grip, while Justin Rose (England) uses a 1.68-inch grip. Famous instructor Harvey Penick (USA) emphasized the importance of the putter by saying, "A good putter is a match for anyone. A bad putter is a match for no one." Remember that the putter choice is the final weapon that can determine your score.
