Lee Jun-seok Visits Jeju: "No Consultation After Yoon's Election, There Is No 'Party Affairs Vacuum'"
Participation in the Launch Ceremony of the Election Committee on the 6th Remains Uncertain
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the People Power Party, who has been away from Seoul for three days, expressed dissatisfaction with presidential candidate Yoon Seok-yeol's lack of communication on the 2nd in Jeju. Candidate Yoon has not contacted Lee directly despite his recent activities.
On the day, Lee met with reporters at the Jeju 4·3 Peace Park and said, "People are saying things like 'Are you refusing party duties?' but since the candidate was selected, I have not performed any party duties. After the secretary-general and others were replaced according to the candidate's intentions, to my recollection, I have only received one report," he said.
He continued, "No one has asked me about my intentions regarding party duties, so aside from the one request from the secretary-general to replace Representative Kim Seok-ki and Representative Seong Il-jong, I have not received any reports or engaged in any substantial consultations about party affairs. Therefore, I do not understand the perception that there has been a party duty vacuum," adding, "I believe party affairs are currently proceeding smoothly without any gaps."
When asked what actions by Candidate Yoon would prompt his return, he replied, "I have neither demanded nor consulted with Candidate Yoon on anything. There is no disagreement between us," and rebutted, "Therefore, interpreting my actions as a specific demand is a very serious and insulting misunderstanding of me."
He also said, "The person who made remarks implying that Lee Jun-seok was trying to embezzle promotional funds in the presence of the candidate knows who the candidate is," adding, "If you do not know, keep going; if you do, personnel measures should be taken."
He stated he has no intention of stepping down from the position of standing election committee chairman, explaining, "I have consistently stated that the party's election committee is generally led by Chairman Kim Byung-joon, and my role as a commander in the election committee has been limited to that extent."
